Free Family Programs at Holden

         

Eco-Explorations

Join us this summer for our free Eco-Exploration series and discover more about the natural world. Programs start at 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday at the Warren H. Corning Visitor Center and give families a chance to explore Holden’s gardens, ponds and natural areas while getting acquainted with the birds, animals and insects that live in those areas. A complete list of program descriptions follows the schedule.

Dynamic Decomposers - Examine the life of a tree after it is dead.  Discover amazing scavengers and fungi at work.

 

Owl Pellet Discovery - What did that owl eat for dinner? Dissect an owl pellet to find clues to what these night birds find to be tasty treats.

 

Fantastic Forest Finds– Discover the plants, animals and  highlights of a Northeast Ohio forest.

 

Wildflower Wonders – Explore the wildflower gardens and experience the beautiful colors, shapes, smells and textures of the various flowers in bloom as well as the birds and insects that are attracted to them. 

 

Cool Creek Hike - Hike down to the Pierson Creek Valley to explore a stream bank community and discover who lives in the stream.  Many steps involved and you will get wet crossing Pierson Creek.   Ages 9 and up.

 

Trailblazing through Bole Woods– A hike through Bole woods to discover its beauty and why it is designated a National Natural Landmark. Ages 9 and up.

 

Magnificent Monarchs – Join us as we search for Monarch butterflies and other pollinators in our Butterfly and Prairie Gardens

 

Captivating Caterpillars – We will search for caterpillars big and small; beautiful and ugly as they prepare to become butterflies.  Learn why certain caterpillars can only be found on certain plants and why having these plants is important.

 

Beautiful bogs – Discover what a true bog is, where cranberries come from and other plants that like to live in a bog.

 

Stupendous Seed Search – A hike in the woods and prairie garden to find seeds that animals and birds will store for the winter.

 

Herpetology Fun– Learn about and hunt for reptiles and amphibians around ponds, in the woods and fields.

 

Birding Basics for Families - Hike through the various gardens, fields and around ponds at Holden and learn how to identify birds.  Bring binoculars.  We will have a few available to borrow.

 

Mysteries of the Bee World – Learn about the importance of bees as pollinators, look at bees up close, and learn how they make honey from nectar.

 

All programs are free for members and with gate admissions for nonmembers.
