Description

Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga poses so that they can be done with a chair for support, making yoga accessible for everyone.  Learn breathing and relaxation techniques, increase your flexibility and strength, and improve your balance and circulation.  Your body and mind are really going to appreciate this class.  All are welcome.  A great program for seniors.  Wear loose comfortable clothing.

Wine and Cheese Night Hike

Description Find tranquility on a moonlit hike over snow-covered trails in search of Holden’s resident winter wildlife.  Then cozy up to an inviting fire with a variety of wines, non-alcoholic beverages and gourmet cheeses. This is an all-weather event, so dress appropriately and wear hiking shoes. These hikes fill quickly so prompt registration is suggested. Hiking conditions are often on uneven terrain and in very dark conditions. Adults only.

Description

Gather your family and friends and learn to snowshoe. After a brief demonstration, you will strap on snowshoes and go for a gentle hike to explore the great outdoors. We’ll start with the all important trick of how to stand up from a prone position. After participating in one session you will be very comfortable hiking in deep snow with snowshoes. Registration required. Program is only held when there is adequate snow cover.

 

Participants should be over the age of 10. Families with younger children should register for the snowshoeing class offered under the Children's Discoveries section.

Icicles and Frozen Waterfalls Photo Tour with Ian Adams - Rescheduled

Description

Join Adams, author of the new book, A Photographer's Guide to Ohio, for a one-day photo tour of some of his favorite places for photographing icicles and frozen waterfalls in and around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  Visit the Cuyahoga River Gorge, which has the finest display of icicles in Ohio; Blue Hen Falls and Brandywine Falls in the Cuyahoga Valley; and Bridal Veil Falls and Big Falls of Tinkers Creek in Bedford. Adams will share tips on photographing icicles and waterfalls in winter. The class reconvenes at Holden on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 2-4pm to review some of your photographs taken on the photo tour and learn some Photoshop techniques for fine-tuning your winter photographs.

Potluck with Your Pooch

Description

Enjoy a crisp winter afternoon hike with your dog looking for ways that nature handles winter and learn how to quickly identify some common trees in the winter. We will finish with a potluck dinner in the Holden Shelter House with a warm fire. Please bring a dish to share. Hot beverages provided. If the snow is deep we will have snowshoes available.

Discovering Rhododendrons – in Holden’s Rare Books

Description

Get a head start on Holden’s “Year of the Rhododendron,” in anticipation of our new Rhododendron Exploration Garden. Botanical and horticultural artists and illustrators have long favored rhododendrons as subjects, much as gardeners enjoy growing diverse species and cultivars. Books in the Warren Corning Library’s special collection beautifully document the history of rhododendron discovery, hybridization, and garden use. A slide lecture will be followed by a visit to the rare book room.

Twill Bottom Market Basket

Description

Weave this beautiful market basket with flat rattan reed and maple splint woven near the center for accent. This is a great basket to carry produce from the garden, store yarn for knitting or give as a gift. You will be taken step by step through the basket weaving process. Along the way you will learn different weaving techniques. To create the unique design on the bottom we will use a twill weave pattern. The sides will be created from a plain weave pattern. When completed you will take home a basket 8" x 12" at the base and 7" high not including the handle. Please bring a bag lunch.
