Build a Rain Barrel:
Save that Rain for a Sunny Day!

Description

Join us for a Rain Barrel building workshop. Rain Barrels are containers used to collect and store rainwater that otherwise is lost to runoff or storm drains. Collected water can then be used to water plants, lawns and gardens and to wash cars. At this workshop we provide the re purposed 55 gallon food barrel and everything else needed to build an attractive, hassle and mosquito free rain barrel ready to hook up to a downspout.

 

The Holden Arboretum and Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District are teaming up to provide workshops for those who want to know more about rain barrels and rain gardens. Learn more about how you can help the environment through your home landscape.

Plant Taxonomy Made Easy - *ISA CEU

Description

Sound like an expert when talking about plants. Holden's president and chief executive plant geek, will keep you from tripping over the Latin names of plants and clear up any confusion you may have about descriptive plant terms. By the end of the class you will be confidently using and pronouncing Latin scientific names as well as describing plants' leaves, flowers, fruit and other morphological characters.

 

People enrolled in the Holden Tree Treks program will find this course invaluable. Please bring a hand lens

Holden Tree Treks - *ISA CEU

Sessions are held twice per month, beginning in May and run through the first Saturday in October.
Take however many sessions you would like and enter the program at any time.

Description Tree Treks is for anyone who loves trees and is interested in learning about the principal native and introduced landscape trees found in our area. In each session a different set of 12 trees is highlighted on a 2-hour walk. Distinguishing characteristics for identifying each species are discussed, along with site adaptations and other horticultural characteristics. Tree Treks is taught by Holden Arboretum president and CEO Clem Hamilton, along with Charles Tubesing, chief horticulturist; and Ethan Johnson, plant records curator. Two instructors lead each session. ISA members can earn CEUs for participation. Sessions are held twice per month, beginning in May and run through the first Saturday in October. All sessions take place in the field so dress for the weather of the day. We encourage repeat participation for people who took the course last year as we will be covering many trees we did not cover last year. Please bring a hand lens and water and wear good walking shoes and a hat. Clipboards for note taking and summary sheets are provided. We strongly encourage taking the free two-hour Plant Taxonomy course as a prerequisite.

Wednesday Lantern Court Garden Tours

Perennial Propagation 101

Rhododendron Tours at the David G. Leach Research Station

Description Take this infrequent opportunity to visit one of our horticultural gems, the David G. Leach Research Station in Madison, Lake County. Meander among thousands of blooming rhododendrons in a woodland garden, and check out the new rhododendron hybrids that are being bred and selected for future introduction. Research staff and guides will be on hand to lead tours, starting every hour on the hour. Last tour begins at 3pm. Directions will be sent upon registration.

Small Ornamental Trees for the Landscape

Description This class will concentrate on small trees that are a bit out of the ordinary such as the Franklinia tree that blooms in the fall as its foliage turns an orange-red. We will walk through the gardens of Holden to view and discuss a diversity of trees that will spice up your landscape. We will also learn about the cultural requirements of these easy to manage trees and how best to use them as focal points in the home landscape.
