Family Snow Shoe Hike

Description Have you ever wondered how snow shoes work? Come out and try on a pair. We will teach you how to put them on, how to walk, how to turn and how to get back up once you fall down. We will play some games and take a walk. You will be a pro in no time. Dress for the weather and be sure and wear boots with a large sole if possible. The bigger and heavier the boot, the better the snowshoes stay on.

Treats From Trees

Description

Where do toys, books, tables and maple syrup come from? These great things come from trees. Learn about all kinds of things we use every day that come from trees. Then we will take a walk outside to visit some of the trees used for making these things. Take home a souvenir from a tree and end on a sweet note provided by a sugar maple. Dress for walking outside.

Marvelous Magnificent Maples That Shine

Description

Do you like maple syrup? Do you like making things? Have you ever drawn on metal? Visit The Holden Arboretum and learn all about the great things that come from maple trees. You will even get to taste some of them. Then create an embossed copper image of a maple leaf. Embossing is creating 3-D relief drawings on a thin sheet of metal. You can use your completed images to make cards, book covers and more. Dress for outside.

Noisy Night Animals

Description

What do owls, woodcocks and spring peepers have in common? They are just a few of the noisy animals that come out at night. Take a short trip out to the Working Woods in the forest to see what we can hear. We will read a story to learn about animals and enjoy cocoa and cookies by the fire in the old Maple Museum. Then we will go on the prowl to see who is up at night in the forest.

A Place To Grow

All seeds need a good place to grow, however, finding that place can be difficult. Join us as we read Stephanie Bloom’s A Place to Grow. We’ll make grass seed heads that look like the seed in the book and go on a seed hike. At the end, you’ll take a seed home with you so that you can find it a good place for it to grow.

Family Hike to Little Mountain

Description Do you like gigantic boulders with crevices, cracks and pools of water? Little Mountain is the perfect place to explore if you don't mind getting wet and dirty. Join us as we locate the sites of old hotels, find names carved into rocks more than 100 years ago and search for the old spring house. Bring a sense of adventure and boots. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and hike for two miles. Please dress for the weather and wear foot gear with good tread for wet walking.

Description Join us as we travel back in time and into the stream as we explore Stebbins Gulch. We'll search for crayfish, climb a waterfall and locate rock layers from earlier times. You might even find a fossil or stone carving. Bring a sense of adventure, waterproof boots and a change of clothes. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and hike for two miles, often times in the creek. Please dress for the weather and wear foot gear with good tread for wet and slippery walking.

Description Join us as we explore the pristine ravine that is home to Pierson Creek. This valley, which is a short walk from the Corning Visitor Center, is full of magnificent trees, native animals and fascinating geology. We'll search for crayfish in the stream, learn about the many different kinds of trees and see what surprises lurk under the logs and around every corner. Each family member must be able to walk for at least 2.5 miles up and down steps, over and under logs and in the creek. Please wear hiking shoes that can get wet. This is a rugged hike.
